About Beam
Beam was first established in 2016 by directors Jonathan Casciani and Oliver Wood after 20 years of working in the arts as designers specialising in books. Our publishing programme is focussed on world class artists that have not had the opportunity to publish a monograph with a major institution, lesser known aspects of an artist's oeuvre and a range of smaller artist led books that tackle the issues of our time such as ecology, gender equality, radical politics and slow looking.
Our books are scholarly and entertaining, beautifully designed and a pleasure to read. Our books capture the work of extraordinary artists with a unique perspective from writers of equal talent.
In 2018 we began selling original artworks by artists we were working with, initially as a means to help fund our ambitious book projects. This made exceptional artworks available to people who may have not previously purchased an artwork and serious collectors who are looking for artworks that are supported by serious publications.
Selling artwork led us to open our first gallery space in Nottingham, to support a roster of artists linked to our international publishing programme and exceptional artists from the region. We work with artists who exercise a high level of craft in their work, artists of historic significance and artists that address in some way the major issues of our time.
Our aim is to present institutional quality exhibitions on a small scale in a relaxed atmosphere. Our space brings together a gallery, bookshop and cafe in a large Victorian school building which is part of a studio and gallery complex called Primary.
